Arrow & Slocan Lakes Community Services

Community Action Program for Children- individual support and group activities to benefit community members and families. Group support for parents and their children. All the services provided by CAP C are free to participants.

Parenting Programs: Success by 6, Nobody’s Perfect, Ready or Not, Mother Goose to provide support and information to parents and their children

Child and Youth Mental Health, Sexual Abuse Intervention Program, Children Who Witness Abuse: These programs together provide crisis intervention, assessment, counselling and referrals for children and youth.

The Home Support Program: Community Health Workers do personal care, medication check in visits, respite, meal prep for special diets and palliative care work.

Safe Home Program: Volunteers are trained to provide on-call services for crisis situations. Safe Home providers also receive support and skill development in Safe Home procedures and crisis management. Many of the referrals to the Safe Home Program come from three main sources, the Arrow Lakes Hospital, the local Police Station, and the Ministry for Human Resources.

Senior’s Community Activity Program “New Horizons” which has a Program Mandate to function as a Community Activation Day Program targeted mainly for seniors where social events are developed and advertised.

EAS (Employment Assistance Services) has had a program mandate to provide community based employment services to residents of Nakusp, New Denver, Silverton, Edgewood, Fauquier, Burton and Trout Lake in order for them to find and keep employment. These services include assistance with resume development and job search, skills development and training packages, access to computers with Internet, fax and telephone for employment purposes. Outreach continues to serve approximately 4000 clients in the Nakusp and New Denver areas through in person or telephone contacts per contract year.

Targeted Wage Subsidy has had a program mandate to assist unemployed, Employment Insurance eligible individuals experiencing difficulty in finding work to benefit from on-the-job work experience.

Training for Jobs assists employable individuals referred by Ministry of Employment and Income Asssistance by providing assessment, training, career development and work placements towards an outcome of ongoing employment.

Women’s Counselling Programs: Stopping the Violence (STV), assists women who have experienced violence by providing counselling, group work and referrals.

Volunteer Drivers: Finds rides for people to go to medical appointments.

Meals on Wheels & Frozen Meals are volunteer led programs that assure that community members are getting a good nutritious meal.

Food Bank: The agency operates the food bank on donations.

Club House: Terra Pondera mental health consumers club house provides space for meetings, training, support, networking and generally as a resource for mental health service providers, consumers and their families.

Transit has a program mandate to operate regional bus service Nakusp to Nelson, Slocan to Nelson, Salmo to Nelson, Kaslo to Nelson and to operate HandiDart internal to Nakusp, Kaslo, and Nelson and area. Starting Feb 06 new runs provide service from Nelson to Castlegar with connections to the Trail Regional Hospital.

Youth Coordinator: To provide coordination for the Nakusp Youth Centre and to assess community needs for youth activities.

Skills Link: A Federally funded youth project to assist youth with employability skills and work experience.

AIM: Adults Instructing and Mentoring provides interaction between seniors and youth to foster intergenerational connections for skills acquisition and recreational activities.
